Early Prediction of Mortality, Severity, and Length of Stay in the Intensive Care Unit of Sepsis Patients Based on Sepsis 3.0 by Machine Learning Models
Problem
Clinicians find it difficult to predict early outcomes (mortality, severity, length of ICU stay) for sepsis patients in intensive care.
Why it matters
Early prediction could guide treatment and reduce patient mortality in the ICU.
What the AI did
Three machine learning models (logistic regression, random forest, XGBoost) were trained on the first 6 hours of ICU data from 2,224 sepsis patients to predict mortality, severity, and length of stay.
Results
Severity prediction achieved the best classification results (AUC-based) with the random forest classifier, sensitivity = 0.65; abstract truncated before further metrics.
Impact
The study shows ML can predict sepsis outcomes from early ICU data, with modest reported performance.
